Quantum mechanics

A device that exists in two different states at the same time, and coincidentally proves that Albert Einstein was right when he thought he was wrong, has been named as the scientific breakthrough of the year.
The machine, consisting of a sliver of wafer-thin metal, is the first man-made device to be governed by the mysterious quantum forces that operate at the level of atoms and sub-atomic particles.

Normal, everyday objects obey the laws of conventional Newtonian physics, named after Sir Isaac Newton, but these rules break down on the sub-atomic scale and a whole new branch of theoretical physics had to be invented to explain what happens on this sub-microscopic level.

Einstein was the first to embrace quantum physics but later rejected it on the grounds that it made everything unpredictable ? "God does not play dice with the universe," he famously stated.

However, a range of effects has been recorded over the past few years that can only be explained by quantum mechanics and in March scientists were able to build the first device that seemed to follow the quantum rules that Einstein was the first to realise applied to light waves.

Another happy customer

Andy

I've just popped my head out of the back door and the light came on perfectly, so all is well.

I will certainly call you again when I need any electrical expertise, and would recommend you to friends.

Best wishes for the New Year.

"the walking people"

I know in this PC world we are supposed to be tolerant of traditionally nomadic Irish gents who buy scrap but they are pissing me off.

Yet again, someone has popped the back off all the van roof tubes looking for copper tubing, trunking etc. Grrrr L

this is the third time in in a month.

No wonder they are amongst the most discriminated-against ethnic groups

Learning Maths

Applying a tiny electrical current to the brain could make you better at learning maths, according to Oxford University scientists.
They found that targeting a part of the brain called the parietal lobe improved the ability of volunteers to solve numerical problems.
They hope the discovery could help people with dyscalculia, who may struggle with numbers.

Christmas tree lights

Early in their history, Christmas lights were so expensive that they were more commonly rented than sold. An electrically lighted tree was a status symbol in the early 1900s.

Electrical appliance fire safety

Electrical appliances, plugs and cables that are old or poorly wired can be a real danger. Just because there’s no flame, doesn’t mean there’s no fire risk. Find out what to check for to ensure your appliances don’t put you or your family or housemates at risk from fire.

What to check for

There are particular danger signs to look out for on all electrical items you have around your home. If you think something needs fixing or changing, do it straight away.

Plugs and sockets

For plugs and sockets, keep an eye out for the following:
  • hot plugs or sockets, scorch marks, fuses that often blow, or flickering lights – they are all signs of loose wiring or other electrical problems
  • badly wired plugs – any coloured wires sticking out could come loose and debris could also get into the plug
  • overloaded sockets – plugging too many electrical appliances into one socket can lead to overheating

Cables and leads

The risks with cables and leads include:
  • getting frayed and damaged – make sure the outer covering of all power leads is in good condition and replace if necessary
  • being badly positioned  – they shouldn’t be anywhere that they could be tripped over, or near water, cookers or other sources of heat
  • running them under rugs or carpets where they can wear through without anyone noticing – position them elsewhere

Appliances

For electrical appliances, you should never:
  • get them wet – this includes plugs and sockets, so don’t put a vase of flowers on top of the TV, for example
  • leave them on at night – unless they are designed to be left on, like freezers
  • put anything in the microwave that is made of metal, or has a metallic finish or parts

LED Lighting

Aragon Housing Association gave us the opportunity to upgrade the lights at
Bilberry Road, Clifton
. D A Woolgar submitted a design working with ASD installing the new LED lighting ranges.

The high-powered LED’s provide excellent illumination (9 x LED=1300 lumens v’s 18w CFL = 1200 lumens). With long life, reduced maintenance requirements and
Energy efficient operation LED technology

The new lighting system has been designed to improve efficiency and lessen environmental impact.

LED’s long life means that lamp changing and lamp failures are a thing of the past. LED lighting life is up to 50,000 hours, typically in the UK this equates to over 16 years.

If you have any questions about LED technology, feel free to contact us.
